“News on the First Update of the ‘Accounts’ Management Feature 🏦✨”

Money Keeper · Only What You Need

Money Keeper · Track Money Easily

Hello 😊 The first update of the “Accounts” management feature that many users have requested is now complete! With this update, I have made it possible to add accounts, adjust account balances (+ or -), and transfer between accounts. These features are available under “Accounts” at the bottom of the app on iPhone, and at the top of the app on iPad and Mac 📱💻 (If you are using an iPad with iPadOS 17, you can access “Accounts” at the bottom of the app.)

Now, beyond income and expenses, I have laid the foundation for managing accumulated assets like “savings,” though only the basic elements have been updated for now. Since this feature is managed based on information that you input yourself rather than actual financial transactions, I have included the “transfer” function even for “cash” assets that are not real accounts, for convenience. Like other features, I will continue improving it based on your feedback 👍 The “Accounts Management” feature has been released as a membership feature 🙏

While preparing this update, I spent a lot of time carefully reviewing the many opinions you shared and thinking deeply about the design. Until now, the Money Keeper app has focused solely on “expense management” to maintain a simple and intuitive experience. Even with the addition of the “Accounts” feature, I designed it to be independent from the “income/expense” management features so that this advantage would not be compromised.

There were also technical challenges. While preparing the “Accounts” management feature, I considered a structure where I could link the asset (“payment method”) used for each expense to manage payment methods per expense. However, this approach conflicted conceptually with the “fixed expenses” feature of the Money Keeper app. The “fixed expenses” feature is one of the most appreciated core features, allowing you to anticipate and plan recurring expenses by showing them in advance every month until they end. Because it is designed to be shown “in advance” each month, it does not align conceptually with “balance calculation” for accounts, making it difficult to implement a system that directly links accounts as payment methods.

Additionally, even if I implemented a feature connecting “expenses” and “accounts,” it might be unnecessary for users who are already satisfied with the current features of the Money Keeper app, and it could reduce the app’s “intuitiveness.” In particular, I gave a lot of thought to whether the highly requested “payment method” categorization feature truly needs to be connected to “accounts.”

So, I am considering designing “payment methods,” which are directly related to “expense management,” as an independent feature rather than linking them to accounts. At the same time, I am planning to provide “statistics by payment method,” which many of you have requested. I am also exploring new ways to reflect this in accounts.

As one of these new directions, I thought about connecting the “monthly settlement (monthly expense review)” feature that many of you have requested. Through monthly settlement, you can review this month’s expenses and reflect them in your accounts along with notes. While the previously considered approach would automatically reflect expenses in the corresponding account when recording them by linking a payment method (account), this approach allows you to “manually” reflect them in accounts based on each settlement cycle while evaluating your expenses.

I find it very rewarding to explore ways to reflect your feedback while maintaining the essence of a household account book—“expense management”—and the philosophy of “simplicity.” I sincerely thank you for taking the time to share such valuable and inspiring feedback 🙇‍♂️

Thank you to all of you who use Money Keeper for managing your expenses 🙏

I hope you always stay healthy 💪
Wishing you a wonderful day~! 🌈✨
